Effective March 29, 2024, Japan’s Digital Nomad Visa is now open for applications (Ministry of Foreign Affairs).
Japan’s digital nomad visa does not include a residence card or a residence certificate. Therefore, you will be responsible for providing your own private health insurance covering a minimum of ¥10 million for death, injury, and illness for the duration of your stay in Japan. This visa allows you to stay anywhere in Japan for up to six months. Although you cannot renew this visa immediately, you can re-apply for it six months after leaving Japan.
You must be a national of a visa-exempt country that also has a bilateral tax agreement with Japan, such as the United States, Singapore, Canada, the EU, amongst many others.
An annual income of ¥10 million or more (approximately $62,100 USD as of now) is required from a foreign public or private organization. Self-employed applicants are also eligible, but they must provide proof of a non-Japanese contract before applying.
As with most residency requirements around the world, 183 days (six months) is the magic number beyond which you are liable for tax residency (but on the flip side become eligible for societal benefits). Enjoy your time in Japan with peace of mind by keeping track of your Japanese residency days with Pebbles.
